The correlation of elderly diseases, presbyopia diseases and refractive power of reading glasses in rural areas

Abstract
Purpose: By survey of elderly diseases, presbyopia diseases of the aged in rural areas make use of manufacturing reading glasses. and analyzing the correlation of survey results and refractive power of reading glasses

Methods: By analyzing survey results from 215 aged people who are over sixties and living in Jeollabuk-do. Survey questions are related to diseases including hypertension and diabetes, eye surgeries, and eye symptoms.

Results: Survey results seem that the number of patients who had symptoms of hypertension was bigger than who had symptoms of diabetes mellitus. For each diseases, women have higher rate of occurrence to men. According to the survey, there were 93 patients(43.3%) who had cataract surgery, and 10 patients(4.7%) who had glaucoma surgery. Patients who had glaucoma surgery had symptoms of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. There were 6 patients(2.8%) who had eyelid surgery and all of them were women. Also, none of patients had pterygium surgery. 105 patients(48.8%) had symptoms of myodesopsia and in terms of age composition, it happened most commonly for age of seventies. 153 patients(71.2%) had symptoms of dry eye and the majority of them were women. Also, it happened most commonly for age of eighties or higher. There were 28 patients(13.0%) suffered from symptoms of retinal detachment. The majority of them were women. For hypertension patients, it seems to be that many of them had cataract, glaucoma, and eyelid surgeries. Also many of them had symptoms of myodesopsia, dry eye, and retinal detachment. There were no difference for diopter of reading glasses between normal group and patients groups who had cataract, glaucoma, and eyelid surgeries and had symptoms of myodesopsia, dry eye, and retinal detachment.

Conclusions: The survey results of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, Cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, myodesopsia and dry eye symptoms seems to be useful for checking the condition of presbyopia diseases, but there are no correlation between presbyopia diseases and refractive power of reading glasses.
